Jeep Steering Upgrades & Death Wobble Fixes
Bigger tires and lift kits put more stress on your Jeep’s steering. We solve common problems like steering shake, sloppy feel, and death wobble — then upgrade weak factory parts so your Wrangler or Gladiator drives straight and safe.
Death wobble feels like an uncontrollable front-end shake, usually triggered when you hit a bump or sometimes at certain highway speeds.
Here’s how we handle it in the shop:
We’ll bring your Jeep in and give it a full shakedown, checking every steering and suspension component for excessive wear or play. Common causes include worn track bar bushings, bad ball joints, loose or worn steering ends, control arms, or incorrect caster settings.
Our first step is to replace any issues we can clearly see and diagnose. In most cases, that eliminates the wobble completely. If it doesn’t, we go deeper into what you can’t always see at first glance — like tire condition or caster angles.
Most of the time, fixing visible wear takes care of the problem. But in those tougher cases, we keep digging until we find the real cause so your Jeep drives straight, safe, and shake-free again.
Bigger tires often require stronger steering. Your Jeep isn’t stock anymore, and your steering shouldn’t be either.
Factory tie rods, drag links, and track bars are fine when a Jeep rolls off the lot - but once you lift it and add larger tires, those parts could become weak links. They can bend when offroading, wear out more quickly due to the larger loads placed on them, or cause sloppy handling.
That’s why we install heavy-duty steering systems from trusted brands like Steer Smarts, Apex Chassis, TeraFlex, Rock Krawler, Artec, and MetalCloak. These upgrades are engineered to handle larger tires, improve durability, and give your Jeep a tighter, more confident feel both on the street and off-road.
The result: steering that holds alignment, resists bending, and matches the capability of your lifted Jeep.
Bump steer shows up when your Jeep darts left or right after hitting a bump, making it feel like the steering wheel is being tugged out of your hands. It’s unpredictable and frustrating, especially at highway speeds or on rough back roads.
The cause is mismatched steering geometry after a lift — the drag link and track bar aren’t running parallel, so as the suspension cycles the axle shifts side to side.
On Jeeps with under 3.5 inches of lift, a drag link flip and raised track bar bracket usually aren’t required, and a proper alignment with caster and toe set correctly keeps things in check. But once you’re over 3.5 inches of lift, you’re in the territory where geometry corrections matter. That’s when a drag link flip and raised track bar bracket come into play, keeping those bars parallel and reducing bump steer along with the harsh steering feel on bad roads or rough terrain.
The result is steering that feels predictable, safe, and confidence-inspiring whether you’re on the highway or off-road.
A steering stabilizer’s job is to minimize feedback and potential bump steer, especially when you’re running larger tires. Where we differ from the internet “experts” is that we don’t believe a stabilizer is pointless — it has a purpose. What it won’t do is fix bad steering.
If a shop tells you a stabilizer will cure death wobble, walk away. At best, a stabilizer can “mask” the real problem for a little while, but it won’t solve worn components, bad geometry, or loose hardware. That’s why we always diagnose the root cause first.
For Jeeps that are dialed in, adding a quality stabilizer smooths out road feel and makes daily driving more comfortable. We also offer dual stabilizer setups for customers who like the aggressive look, but understand that two isn’t better than one — it’s cosmetic, not a necessity.
Hydraulic assist is designed for Jeeps running true 37s or larger tires, or rigs that spend serious time on rocks and trails. If you’ve ever tried to turn the wheel while aired down on big tires, you know how heavy and sluggish it can feel — sometimes you’re fighting the wheel just to make a turn.
A PSC hydraulic assist system adds power to your factory steering box, giving you extra force to move those big tires without the strain. On-road, it feels natural and smooth. Off-road, it makes crawling over obstacles far easier and prevents steering fatigue.
This isn’t something every Jeep needs — but for hardcore builds or overland rigs that see tough terrain, hydro assist is the step that keeps your Jeep steering predictable and manageable no matter the conditions.
JK Regear — Part 1

Jeep Regearing & Axle Upgrades
Bigger tires change your Jeep’s final drive ratio. Regearing restores power, shift points, and drivability so your JL, JK, or Gladiator doesn’t feel sluggish, constantly downshift, or lose performance on the trail.
Why Regear?
Larger tires throw off your Jeep’s factory gearing, which leads to sluggish acceleration, constant downshifting, poor fuel economy, and added strain on your transmission. Regearing restores your Jeep’s power band. It puts torque back where you need it, smooths out shift points, and makes highway driving or towing far easier. Off-road, the right gears give you better crawl control and reduce stress on the drivetrain. In short, regearing makes your Jeep feel right again — stronger on the street, smoother in daily driving, and more capable on the trail.
Axle Health
When we regear your Jeep, we don’t just swap gears — we inspect the entire axle. That means seals, bearings, and shafts get checked so you’re not putting brand-new gears into worn components. It’s also the best time to think ahead. If you plan to wheel harder later, we can add lockers, chromoly shafts, or reinforcements now — saving you the cost of doing it twice. The result is confidence on the road and on the trail: gears set up correctly, axles ready for bigger tires, and upgrades that match the way you use your Jeep.
Precision Setup
Setting up gears isn’t a DIY job — it requires exact specs for backlash, preload, and tooth pattern. Miss by even a little and you’ll get noise, heat, or early failure. Music City 4x4 is Middle Tennessee’s only Yukon Gear And Axle Master Installer, which means we follow strict industry standards. We keep adjusting until your gears are 100% dialed in, then prove it with the initial 15-mile break-in drive before you take your Jeep home. The result: gears set up right the first time, and ready for thousands of reliable miles.
Tire Size | Recommended Gear Ratio | Use Case |
---|---|---|
33" | 4.10–4.56 | Daily driver, light trails |
35" | 4.56–4.88 | Balanced drivability, towing friendly |
37" | 4.88–5.13 | Highway + trail; restores power |
40" | 5.13–5.38 | Extreme builds; axle upgrades recommended |
